The Netflix Squid Game mango energy drink, a 250ml can bought in Belgium, is the yellow half of a two can set, and the colour comes from an unusually specific source. Where the pink watermelon can in this archive takes its colour from black carrot concentrate, this one uses safflower, a thistle-like flower grown for its yellow dye long before anyone thought to put it in a drink. Two cans from the same production line, coloured by two entirely different plants.
Young-hee appears again, the animatronic doll from the Red Light, Green Light game that opens the first episode, but she is cropped much tighter here. Face and shoulders only, filling the front of the can against a saturated yellow body, where the watermelon can gives her more room. The close crop is the better decision. Her face is the whole point of the character, that fixed painted smile and the mechanical head turn, and pulling in on it makes a bright yellow mango can feel faintly unsettling in a way the wider illustration does not.
Young-hee is not an invention of the series. The name and the look come from a character in South Korean primary school textbooks used from the 1950s onwards, familiar to generations of Korean children in the way Janet and John once were in Britain. Netflix released Squid Game season two in December 2024, three years after the first became the most watched series the platform had ever aired.
The European editions are genuinely separate products from the Korean ones. This can is printed in French, German, Spanish and Portuguese with no English and no Korean, and carries Hot Shots Europa as distributor. The Korean domestic version, sold through GS25 convenience stores, runs a completely different recipe built on ginseng, guarana, green tea extract and L-carnitine. Same licence, same doll, different drink.
Inside is a carbonated mango energy drink at 32mg of caffeine per 100ml, which works out at 80mg for the can, alongside taurine at 0.40% and added niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. It carries 21.9 calories and 4.9 grams of sugar per 100ml, sweetened with sugar alongside acesulfame K and sucralose.
